Wrap Cloth Project: Child’s Cape

I made this beautiful Twig + Tale Traveller Cape for my daughter after receiving the pattern in my monthly pattern subscription from In A Haystack.

In A Haystack is a small UK company who help ” stitchers discover sewing patterns for garments and fabric from independent suppliers in a fun, flexible and budget-friendly way”.

I look forward to receiving my pack each month as the pattern, the newsletter and a fabric shop discount code are always fabulous!

I chose Freddie Mercury Murmuration for my blue-loving 10-year-old daughter – I had a 2m sample piece here to work from, and that was plenty for this cape and getting the pattern placement where I wanted it.

I overlocked and washed the wrap cloth before cutting out the pieces, and then overlocked the edges of the cut pieces before sewing to prevent them fraying. The lovely loose weave of our cloth makes for a great wrapping experience but is very prone to fraying. If you don’t have an overlocker you can zig-zag stitch along the raw edges to minimise fraying.

I lined the cape with grey fleece – this was originally a cheap blanket from Asda! The warm soft lining makes for a really snuggly cape, and Natasha loves it! It is fully reversible too, which is handy when she is going undercover as a ninja (this has happened).

I am a reasonably competent sewist and made up the cape in under 2 hours (after cutting out), so it is a nice afternoon/ evening / anytime you can get some me-time kind of project that won’t take forever!

I have been asked if our wrap width cloth is wide enough to make up an adult version of the cape – this is something that I will check as soon as I have had the chance to print and assemble the pdf pattern.
