This is your handy guide to Firespiral- who we are, what we make, our designs, and the ethos behind our company.

About Us

Firespiral is the creation of friends, Tamsin and Jen. We set up the company back in 2012 after a joke about weaving our own wraps got out of hand! We’re based in the North West of England, and you can read more about who we are here. There are only two of us, plus our seamstress Judith, although we work closely with our mill and lots of other small independent businesses too.

What We Make

We design and weave a range of different jacquard cloths, then sew it into baby slings, brushed cotton blankets scarves and other accessories.

What Makes Us Special?

We’re a micro-manufacturer, which means that we work on a tiny scale compared to regular companies! We weave in small, limited edition runs, using a bespoke, purpose designed weave structure that is perfect for carrying babies with! We create our own, unique designs, and everything is woven and sewn here in Lancashire.
We’re an eco-friendly and ethical company, and our production is zero waste.

Our Products

We make a range of babywearing products, home and personal accessories. You can also buy our cloth unhemmed to sew your own craft projects with.

The materials we use to weave our cloth.

We use natural fibres, or man made fibres created from organic materials (such as viscose from wood pulp). All our fibres are ethical sourced and safely dyed. We use organic fibres wherever possible, and all of our yarn is very high quality to make sure that it washes well and withstands the heavy use that wraps get. Our blankets are made from recycled cotton, reclaimed offcuts of cloth from manufacturing that would otherwise head to landfill. The waste cloth is broken down into fibres that are then regenerated and spun into new yarn!
As a micro manufacturer we need smaller quantities of yarn than big businesses, and can often make use of the yarn that they have left over from their big weaves. This helps to reduce wastage and gives us access to special yarns that we might not have the buying power to afford otherwise.

How we name our woven wraps.

We use a naming system inspired by scientific categorisation, so that each wrap name identifies the design, warp colour and unique weft colour/blend!

The types of weave we use.

There are lots of variables in weaving, and by changing these you can weave a huge range of different types of cloth on the same loom. We’ve developed several different unique weave formulas which create bespoke cloth, perfect for carrying with. You can read more about the qualities of each of our weaves here.

Our Designs

We create our own woven designs, and they’re inspired by science, myths and the local landscape. You can look inside our early sketchbooks here. Each design has been woven in multiple different colourways and fibre blends. We usually weave 4 or 5 different designs on each warp, which then form a collection.

Vortex Design: This design is a variation of the tourbillon design, with a single, larger repeat of the bubble swirl across the body of the wrap.

Murmuration Design: This was a design competition winner, and is the only design not wholly our own. We adapted parts to fit with our style and make it weavable, but the majority of the design is true to the original submission.

Fractals Design; This was a very early design, created because we needed a pattern with a very small repeat to use on a test weaving loom. We haven’t used it for a long time now.
