Front Double Hammock: Wrapping Tutorial

What is a front double hammock carry?

  • It is a supportive front carry, suitable from birth. The wrap goes over both of your shoulders and ties under you baby’s bum (or behind your back if your wrap is long enough)
  • It is called a front double hammock (FDH) because it is made up of 2 hammock passes across baby. A hammock pass is so called as it mimics baby sitting on the edge of a hammock – nothing goes between the legs, all cloth is behind baby from knee-pits up to the nape of the neck.
  • The front double hammock works best with shoulder flips. The flips put an angle into the cloth which allows the wrap to travel in straight lines. Straight lines make tightening (and retaining tightness) much easier.
  • You can either pre-tie the carry, or tie it around your baby as you hold them. The steps you’ll follow to tie them both is slightly different but you’ll end up with the same carry in the end.

What size wrap do I need?

  • The front double hammock is commonly tied in front under baby’s bum and needs a base-1 or base-2 wrap. If you use a base size wrap you can tie it behind you.

Pros and cons of the carry

  • A front double hammock is a supportive front carry that is great from birth although it is important that you tighten well with a newborn to prevent slumping.
  • FDH can be tricky to get the hang of tying at the beginning. The pre-tied version can trap slack that you have to chase out through the passes. The non pre-tied version is easier to tighten as you go, but it takes a while before the wrap takes your baby’s weight so you have to support them as you wrap.
  • Shoulder flips can feel a bit confusing, especially keeping them ‘flipped’ in the pre-tied version before you put your baby in. By the time you’ve made your second pass, the first one might need re-shaping. Wrapping in front of a mirror can help you keep track.
  • It looks pretty, especially with the shoulder flips capping your shoulders

How do I tie a front double hammock carry?

These are the instructions for the pre-tied variation of the carry.

These are the instructions for the tying the front double hammock carry round your baby whilst holding them. The basic steps are the same as the pre-tied version, but you’ll start by moving the middle marker round to your back so that your first pass is the right length. The benefit of this version is that you can take the slack out of the carry as you go. The tricky bit is the first minute when you’re trying to wrap the cloth round your baby one handed. Once you’ve made that first pass your baby it gets easier!
